Description

Okay, I was gonna draw Pavone in the pic with her, but I really wanted to focus on her colors, so I drew her by herself. She’s just about to take flight (the ‘drumstick’ part of her wing that attaches to her shoulder is NOT visable, as it’s hiding behind the front part of the wing. I just don’t want anyone to think her wings are growing out of her butt!)

***If the pose looks familiar, it’s because I got it from Pooky’s character, Pigeon. I’m sorry, Pooky! I still had her pic in my hard-drive from the art-trade from last year, and I needed a pose really fast. I apologize and promise it will never happen again without first asking your permission!***

Anyways, this is my entry for :iconwild-hearts: Design a Mate for Pavone Contest. This is my mare, Faisan (pronounced with a nasal Fay-Son *long 'O'*, as if you were French.)

Name: Faisan (Means " pheasant". What language, you ask? Pick one! German, ***French, Italian, Spanish…they all refer to the pheasant with practically the same word.) ***I used the French version of pronunciation.

Age: Unknown

Bird species: Red-Golden Pheasant (Chrysolophus Pictus)

The red-golden is actually a color mutation. They are called Golden Pheasants. Like the peafowl, golden pheasants have many color mutations, or varieties. For the golden pheasants, these colors include red-golden, snowflake (a new mutation), yellow-golden (the most common), and dark-throated. In this species, only the male is born with the beautiful colors used for attracting females, warding off other males, and claiming territory. The male has a lovely golden flap of feathers on the back of his neck. When he displays, they fold out and cover both sides of his cheeks. The females are a dull brown with black barring on the feathers. Sometimes after a few years of laying, females may spontaneously molt into male plumage. The male will still court her and she will continue to lay eggs. The same phenomenon occurs in peafowl as well (except in peafowl, the female may display for the male, as mine do! :D ).

Personality: Shy, mild-mannered, sweet, quiet, gentle, unconfrontational.

Bio: Born to a special herd of Pheasant Horses, Faisan was the only female in the history of her herd to change to male plumage. To her herd members, especially the males, she was ugly and freakish and was immediately thrown out of the herd. She wandered by herself for some time before coming upon a flock of quail. She followed the tiny birds around for years. They didn’t mind her at all, and even perched on her back at night to sleep. She was quite pleased with her new family…until one day when she became overly excited. It had never happened to her before, but while she was trotting behind her quail buddies, she decided to toss her head and break into a gallop. Now, the quail had seen her canter before, but never seen her in full gallop. Suddenly, her lovely golden and black-striped mane feathers, which usually just flowed behind her, folded together and fanned out. The sun captured the lovely crest in its rays, turning the feathers a beautiful and eye-catching iridescent copper. The quail were blinded by this array of vibrant flashes. Confused and frightened, they scattered, leaving a very sad and lonely Faisan to stand in the shadow of her abnormalities. Again, head down, she was on her own, wishing for a friend. She stayed by herself for a many years, and became quite accustomed to it. One day; just a plain, ordinary day, while Faisan was grazing, a glimpse of blue caught her eye. She lifted her head to survey the landscape. There, several yards away, she spotted a HUGE blue and green stallion. Not wanting to have a run-in with him, she turned to leave. Nervous and unsure, she quickened her pace. Her excitability caused her crest to rise in its glorious display. Now, it was the stallion that raised his head to see what brilliant ray of light caught his eye. He watched as she hastily broke into a gallop, her wings partly extended. Seeing, she was about to take flight, he spun around and took off right after her. With a mighty flap of his massive wings, he was at her side, struggling to keep up. He nickered to her softly, asking her to slow down. She refused outright as her heels left the ground. Not being a terribly strong flier, she only stayed airborne for a few wing strides before gently touching down on Earth, only to be once more pursued by the handsome stallion. Finally, she slid to a stop, her crest still in full display. The stallion happily introduces himself as Pavone, the peacock horse. She shyly whispered out her own name and species. Being the absolute gentlemen his momma always taught him to be, Pavone begins telling Faisan that she is the most gorgeous mare he’d ever seen, and would be greatly honored if she would graze with him. She bashfully accepts his offer, and hasn’t left his side since.
